#icebucketchallenge A Social Marketer’s Dream

by in culture club

Have you been nominated? Have you drenched yourself in ice cold water? HAVE YOU DONATED?

I have, and I nominated friends, family as well as my team at Red Caffeine. But before I did I had to know if the amount of Instagram and Facebook posts actually map back to $ – and it did! Per the ALS Association press release:

Washington, D.C. (August  27, 2014) — As of Wednesday, August 27, The ALS Association has received $94.3 million in donations compared to $2.7 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 27). These donations have come from existing donors and 2.1 million new donors. The ALS Association is tremendously thankful for all of the generous support and awareness that this summer phenomenon has generated for the cause.

What is even more amazing is that it is gaining momentum like an avalanche! When I accepted the challenge on the evening of August 18, ALS had collected $15.6 million and look where they are now!

The success of this campaign is more than dollars; it has created awareness to a devastating and widely unknown disease, and it has inspired the human spirit and cultivated a community of giving. Whether you support the cause (as I know some are not due to the stem cell research) or are sick of seeing the videos inundate your feeds, it is undeniable that collectively we are a powerful nation.

I for one am not sick of seeing the posts. I am inspired to do more personally as well as when it can benefit my clients. We are developing what I like to call an “Engagement Campaign” for a client and the #IceBucketChallenge inspired us to make it a Pay-it-Forward effort.

The challenge is HOW you motivate people to #hashtag, selfie and post! Like any marketing effort, it starts with the “influencers” of a market. In the case of ALS, my kids were doing this way before it became popular. It moved from sports guys, to kids, to parents, to organizations, to celebrities. What can you do for your business?

For your own social efforts, do not under estimate the #hashtag. Every week I answer the question what can social media do for B2B. My answer is that similar to attending a conference on a particular topic, or participating in an association in a particular industry, social takes that effort online, exponentially increasing your audience of LIKE MINDED INDIVIDUALS. It can provide you national and international exposure to people who are interested in the topic, product or service you are promoting.

What can you do for your business?

  1. Establish a Content Marketing Plan – think about what is relevant to your audience.
  2. Post/Publish – on LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook.
  3. Connect – with other influencers so that they will share your content with their network.
  4. Consider Engagement Campaigns – it is the year of the selfie; how can you get people to share photos using your product?

Much can be learned from the social media impact of the #IceBucketChallenge. Really think about the power of this campaign and what you can do to create awareness to your product or service. If you can somehow tie it to benefit a cause then more power to you! Let’s keep the spirit of the ALS campaign going! #StrikeOutALS #SocialMedia #RedCaffeineRocks
